Buhari and Chadian President Strategise On How To Tackle The BokoHaram Insurgents

Daily sun reported that, President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari and the President of Chad, Idris Deby, yesterday said that the ongoing offensive against Boko Haram insurgency by joint forces of sub-regional armies would be strengthened when the incoming government of Buhari takes over on May 29.

Addressing newsmen after a meeting at Defence House, Abuja, General Buhari and President Deby said they would work together to end Boko Haram activities in Nigeria and the sub-region.

Explaining the rationale for his visit, President Deby, who said he was in the country to congratulate Buhari on his victory in the recent presidential election, said the meeting with his host centered on how to put an end to the problem of Boko Haram insurgency in the two countries.

The Chadian president submitted that both countries were considering how to bring about peace, stability and security in the sub-region with the core issue of Boko Haram, which was being handled by the two countries.

The Chadian president, who spoke through an interpreter said: “Chad and Nigeria are facing the same challenges and how to meet the expectations of the people. Both countries are members of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the two countries, together with other members are considering how to bring about peace, stability and security in the sub-region with the core issue of Boko Haram that is being handled by the two countries.

“On the issues of common interest, we will foresee this issue together and to have a joint action to handle the issue of Boko Haram and we will over come it, and by the grace of God, peace and security will prevail in the sub-region.”

Giving more details on how his government would tackle insurgency, General Buhari said his administration would sit down with the neighbouring nations to come up with comprehensive review of the security situation in the North-East and how it affected Nigeria.

The president-elect said: “We know how Chad, Niger and Cameroon have been helping Nigeria to secure our borders and you know how this helps in commerce and industry. Due to the insurgency, some of the bridges were blown off while infrastructures were destroyed.”

“These were some of the things that we discussed and God’s willing, we will sit down and make sure we have a comprehensive review of the security situation in the North-East and how it affects the country.”
