It has emerged that three Nigerian born surgeons were among the team of
12 surgeons in the US, who successfully separated a conjoined twins
(pictured with their mother before the surgery), who shared a common
diaphragm, pelvis, lungs, intestines and lining of the heart and were
joined at the chest almost head-to-head. See photos of the Nigerians
below;
A no mean feat, incidentally, the three Nigerians, Professor Oluyinka
Olutoye, a paediatric surgeon, Dr Toyin Olutoye, an anaesthesiologist,
and Dr Oluyemisi Adeyemi-Fowode, a paediatric gynaecologist, received
their Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery degrees from Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile-Ife.
Professor Oluyinka (1st pictured right) and Dr. Toyin (2nd pictured
right) are couple, and both work with Dr Oluyemisi
Adeyemi-Fowode(pictured left) at Texas Children’s Hospital where the
former is a Co-Director
The successful operation that took them and their 9 colleagues 26 hours is currently being celebrated worldwide.
